Tea with my favorite transferware pattern and my 1st GIVEAWAY!!!!!

A new week, a new teascape and a new thing for me to do...host my FIRST EVER GIVEAWAY!!!
How about I give away, hmmm. ummm, let me think, uh, well...let's just say $100 gift certificate to English Transferware, my Etsy shop?  Sound good?  Well check the details at bottom of the post because you can submit several entries...just follow the simple rules!

This week I'm linking up with some of my favorite tea and table memes.  I'm featuring my very favorite transferware pattern.  It's by Spode and called Byron.  If any of you have read my first post I wrote about how I started collecting and then selling transferware.  As my collection was growing and I was on the lookout for pieces to trade up to, buy and sell I ran across a platter in this pattern.  It was one of those things where I knew I HAD TO HAVE IT.  It was on an Ebay auction and I was bound and determine to win...and I did!  I bought my first piece in this pattern from someone in Australia, and often I still buy from there.  It seems to be more readily available there and in England than other places I've found.  The first piece I purchased was this large serving platter:

I fell head over heels for the bucolic scenery in the platter.  It appears that the sale of a cow is taking place as women and the dog look on while a child plays at the feet of the buyer.
I was so excited when this arrived and I displayed it proudly in my kitchen, and still do.  I scour online marketplaces to find additional pieces in the pattern all the time.  Most every piece has a different scene, usually pastoral in nature, reflecting early English farm life.  The brown transfer is handpainted in various shades of blue, pink, taupe, rust, brown, green and gold.

Today I'm serving tea and my Coconut Cream Cheese frosted Lemon Cake using some of my Byron collection.

I used a single, lace trimmed gold window sheer slightly gathered atop my heavy marble chest.

I fanned vintage, embroidered napkins at one end and laid my Barenthal cake forks atop.  I just got this set of French Mabre flatware and I love it!  It normally sells at $125-165 for a 20 pc set for four. I got two sets for $125!  I bought two extra sets in this same Bordeaux color as well as Vert which is a marble green (about the color of my marble on the table).  If anyone wants these they're yours for $67.50 plus $12.49 shipping for a 20 piece service for four set.   Just send me a separate email if you'd like to purchase.   It's hand washable but that's fine with me.  I love the marble look of the handles and the ornate detailing this offers.

I've always loved this large figurine of a boy and his dogs and his attire seems to fit right in with that of the  people seen on the Byron pattern.  I placed him next to a fruit topiary I made a loooong time ago...boy do I need to dust that sucker!  Please don't blow this pic up and see how dusty it is!

I always have these tortoise shell amber lamps on this table.  They cast such a soft glow and add an almost candle like ambiance.  They are wrapped with an oil rubbed bronze finish and leaves that wind up and about the shade from the base.    I really like just about anything amber.

Here's one of my Spode Byron teapots.  To give a bit of height I placed it on a candle stand meant to hold a large pillar.

Creamer and Sugar on a handled tray.

Isn't this a sweet scene on the dessert plates depicting a young mother holding her infant child, their dog at foot and a modest cottage in the background?

I added some candles...these are my favorite barley twisted candlesticks...I tied a shimmery gold organza ribbon with a beaded tassel around them.

As before mentioned, Byron is one of, if not, my all time favorite pattern.  There's nothing I dislike about it.  I'll be doing a large dinner table some time down the road but wanted to tell you a bit about J. C. Horsley.  Mr. Horsley is the artist who painted the scenes for the Byron pattern, which were engraved to copper plates and thus transferred to the pottery.  He was an English academic painter (1817-1903) and is very well known for having designed the first commercially produced Christmas card, commissioned by Sir Henry Cole of London in 1843.
Mr Horsley was also the designer of the Horsley envelope, a pre-paid envelop, the precursor to the stamp!
John Calcott Horsley 1817-1903

COCONUT CREAM CHEESE FROSTED LEMON CAKE
1 box lemon cake mix
1 small box instant vanilla pudding
1 C vegetable oil
4 eggs
1 C Mountain Dew

Frosting:
1 stick butter
2 1/2 cups coconut, flaked
1 8 oz. bar softened cream cheese
1/2 cup Mountain Dew
3 1/2-4 Cups powdered sugar

Mix cake ingredients well and pour into well greased and floured cake pans, bake 20-25 minutes at 350

For frosting, melt butter in saucepan over medium heat, add coconut and cook until it is slightly golden.  Remove from heat and add cream cheese.  Mix.  Add Moutain Dew. Mix.  Add powdered sugar and mix well.  Frost cake. This is yummy!  You can also substiute orange cake mix for lemon and orange juice for the Mountain Dew in both recipes for an orange flavor.

  105. I love transferware, yet I don't own one piece. Everytime I see something I like at TJ Maxx, Marshalls or Home Goods, there are never enough settings, so I just pass on it. I should get one or two just for display. Love your figurine ~ he does look like he'd fit right into a transferware or toile pattern!

  106. If I won the $100.00 shopping spree, I would go right to the brown and white; I love the brown and white toile transferware you have in your etsy. I would probably mix and match a few of the dishes, but I also like the mug and saucer you have, so it would be tough to choose.

  107. Ode To Nancy

    Your transferware is lovely there
    Upon your marble table.
I'd snap it up in one fell swoop
    If monetarily able!

The polychromes, the reds and pinks
    With blues and whites appearing
    Your English transferware to me
    Is totally endearing!

We thank you, Nancy, for your style
    And love of transferware.
We all may oohh and aahh delight
    And each your passion share!

Enjoyed your sweet, lovely blog and photos!
    Thank you, Dear!

  116. We lived in Castle Rock, CO for nearly 20 years and grew to love the entire state. When we first moved there we spent weekends and vacation days looking for ghost towns throughout the mountains and we found dozens, some no more than stone foundations, some with still-standing houses (abandoned over 100 years ago!). We loved Cripple Creek before it became a gambling town, Georgetown, Breckinridge, Leadville, everywhere! We also loved the weather -- people have the mistaken idea that living in Colorado is like living at the North Pole, but the lack of humidity means that we hardly ever wore coats and never had hay fever. The only real drawback was that the growing season was pretty short since we could have snow as late as May 15th and as early as September 20th. Our tomato plants didn't have a chance!

We'd love to move back to Colorado now that we're retired. Our son and daughter still live there with their families. The recession and my ill health mean that we will stay in Tennessee for a few more years though. I can definitely identify with your sadness and yearning for another view of the mountains...

Please enter me in your contest.

Many years ago I used to collect similar items. Sadly they've all been lost. (too long of a story here) AND I didn't know this stuff came in green! lol

I used to have a plate in brown, one in gray, one in reddish/pink, and of course the most common, blue. I wonder if they come in purple? hmmmm

At any rate, this was one of those give-a-ways that I just had to try. Maybe if I won, I could start a new collection again!

Thanks for having such a super contest!

English Cottage Living Room - Before, Partly After & Still a Work in Progress

I am sorry for not posting more pictures of the progress we've made settling into this new (to us) home.   It seems life rushes by so fast and that at times, doing little things, even those that I love and enjoy, often get pushed aside and onto the back shelf of my mind where I tell myself, "I'll get to this later".  Well, it is later and though I don't have as much to share with you as I'd like, I'm going to at least share my favorite spot in our living room.  I promise to show the rest of the room soon but for now the opposite half of the living room has been occupied by my daughters boyfriend who has been staying with us for the past 7 or so weeks until his apartment is ready for him to move into, and so the couch is usually made up for him to sleep on!   Here is a photo of the current living room just as we found it, a small room just off the entry of the house with a nice marble and wood fireplace surround, hard wood floors, beautiful crown mouldi

The History of Johnson Brothers and The Friendly Village Tablescape

Last week, Shawn and I popped into a couple of estate sales and I picked up over 100 pieces of Johnson Brother's The Friendly Village .  I think I may have to hang on to 12 of the dinner plates and use them this year at Thanksgiving but the rest of them, including this 48 piece service for 8, will be you know where. I don't know about you all, but I have had enough of Summer and I am down right ready for the cooler temperatures of Autumn.  I've been doing a lot of rearranging around the house….I'm in one of those zones where I've got a zillion projects going on, even if half of them are just in my mind that I'm contemplating!   We've also been moving kids out and around.  Three of them are out and the three still at home are moving or rearranging their rooms around.    Since I am yearning for Fall, haven't posted any tablescapes in a while and just got these Friendly Village pieces I decided to set the table with them.      Oh great, I

My English Country Mom Cave

Susan, at Between Naps on the Porch is hosting a Home Goods Mom Cave contest with four lucky winners.  Come on in to my little niche I've carved out of my house.  This is where I work, create, relax, read and chat with friends and family. This is one of my favorite spots in the house to read about one of my favorite subjects...English transferware or poetry, and drink tea.  I often start and end my day right here. Next to the chair is an antique dumbwaiter which holds some decorative items as well as lots of poetry books.  This is the view of the room from the wing back chair.  This cozy room serves as a small living room, although it's not uncommon to have 8 or 9 of the girls in here during family gatherings.  It's usually where we all wind up to have coffee and visit. . On either side of the sofa I display some of my vintage Canine figurines on Spode meat drainers. Above the sofa are some of my favorite paintings.  The one directly over the sofa my Mom pain

Decorating with Brown Transferware & $100 GIVEAWAY

Brown was introduced as a transferware color around 1829-30 and is the least expensive of colors to make. Therefore it is fairly common, so far as transferware goes, to find.  It is also one of the most collected colors and it is probably the most versatile of colors in my opinion.  Brown is neutral and looks good with any color scheme from pastels to rich jewel tones, but it is with the ushering in of Autumn that I see it popping up in home decor and vignettes the most.  Though, most of these rooms and vignettes are decorated with brown pieces year round, it just seems the perfect time to share them.  I may have to do another post because there are so, so many more equally beautiful spaces that have incorporated the use of displaying brown transferware  and I can't fit them all here. So, check these lovelies out and then stick around for the giveaway at the bottom of the post. This vignette just stole my heart the first time I saw it.  So many of us have vintage luggage

The Aesthetic Movement and Transferware

What is the Aesthetic Movement? The Aesthetic Movement refers to a period of time in the late 19 th century (1870-1900) which was a backlash to the formal Victorian years.  Artists and writers of the Aesthetic movement period maintained the belief that art should provide refined sensuous pleasure, rather than convey moral or sentimental messages.  They believed that art did not have any didactic purpose; it need only be beautiful.  Japanese art had a great influence on Aestheticism. Aesthetic interiors were often decorated with Japanese prints, screens, fans and other objects. An appreciation of the art of Japan is seen in the work of many Aesthetic artists and designers such as James McNeill Whistler and E.W. Godwin. photo credit Country Living The Aesthetes developed the cult of beauty, which they considered the basic factor in art. They ascertained that life should copy art and considered nature as crude and lacking in design

Decorating with Blue Transferware and a GIVEAWAY!

If you haven't already been over to Enchanted Home , you'll want to go over after you finish this post because the wonderful Tina, who authors the incredibly gorgeous blog,  has a great post up about decorating with dishes plus she's hosting a giveaway to my online shop, English Transferware !  Details at the end of the post! I know Tina loves blue and white (just look at her header and you'll know!) and has a collection of her own. In honor of Tina, I've decided to share some of my favorite images of rooms decorated with and often around blue transferware collections.  You can see more rooms decorated with blue transferware on my Pinterest board . To me, Charles Faudree is just about as synonymous with English transferware as he his with French Country Decorating...he seemed to always find a use for it in his incredibly detailed decorating schemes.  Isn't this bedroom charming? I love this next image from Decor Magazine.  Look how the blu
