Much to do about a hutch ~ Hanging Ladles ~ Winner

First, let me announce the winner of the Gift Certificate to A Little Scrappy.  The winner was chose via Random.org and is LUCKY7DESIGN!  Congratulations!!!   I sent you a message via email.  Please contact me and I'll put you in contact with A Little Scrappy!

Some of my favorite 'things' are, as any of my readers know, is English Transferware.  This week I'm sharing my breakfast nook hutch and a tutorial on using disc hangers.

Now, for a little tutorial on using Disc Hangers (information on where to purchase at the end of post), in this case for hanging ladles.  Generally I use these for hanging plates, and as someone who sells English Transferware, I highly recommend these over any other plate hanger.   They are great for hanging large platters to, and are so easy to use.

I have had several antique transferware ladles that I've wanted to display on my breakfast nook hutch.
Here's my hutch before.  I had a couple of ladles propped up on the bottom shelf against other pieces.

With these disc hangers you simply choose the size you will need, according to the weight of the object you are hanging.   I used the smallest, 30 mm size for my ladles.

They come on a heavy paper stock with complete, easy instructions on back.  Simply remove the disc and wet with a few drops of water by rubbing your finger on the back.

Here's a picture of the wet disc...sorry it's so blurry.

Let the disc set for 5-10 minutes to allow the glue to become tacky.  Then apply to the back of the piece you are hanging, removing any air pockets. Since I am hanging ladles, I cut a bit off the sides so it wouldn't show and then after smoothing it into position I fixed a rubber band around it until it had dried into place.  If you are hanging plates this step is not necessary.  Allow the disc to dry overnight.  Pull on it before hanging to make sure it's secure.  I have never had a problem with one not being secure.
Should you ever decide to remove your hanger, just soak in water according to the package directions.  They will not harm your pottery.
(If you do use the wire plate hangers, be positively sure to use some with plastic/rubber grips to avoid scratching or digging ruts into your plates.  This DOES happen.)

Now that the disc hanger is secure, I'm  ready to hang my ladles.
I hung four of my antique transferware ladles and re-arranged some of the pieces on my hutch.  Here's the finished look...not a huge difference but I must say it felt so good to take it all down, clean it and then put it back up again.
I have a mix of brown and polychrome brown transferware in several patterns.  These pieces represent some of my favorites, including Spode Byron, Royal Staffordshire Jenny Lind, Midwinter Landscape,  A J Wilkinson Pastoral Davenport and more.  I've got a few Aesthetic Movement pieces here, including two of the ladles I just hung up.

I made a tassel from a Circa 1890-91 jumbo coffee cup and hung it on one of the glass knobs.  This Ethan Allen hutch was my husbands when he was little.  He and his brother shared a room and each had one of these hutches back to back to seperate their spaces.  When we got it we took the doors off the front (where the ladles now hang).  I replaced the hardware, most of it with antique glass knobs from a previous home we lived in.

In the photo below I have an antique chamber pot on the floor.  At the top of the hutch is another favorite piece, a Crown Devon transferware drink dispenser in the Safe Harbour pattern.  These are hard to find.

Disc Hangers can be purchase from Disc Hangers or from me directly.  If you go to Disc Hangers, tell Stanley I sent you.
Vintage and antique English Transferware can be purchased from me at my Etsy shop, or email mef you don't see what you're looking for as I've got thousands of pieces which aren't listed on line.
The rabbit family, along with hundreds of other adorable decorative items, on my hutch can be purchased from Decorator's Friend.  Tell Nicci I sent you!

  3. Nancy, thank you for sharing this clever idea. I have a few ladels and have never hung them. A friend ties ribbon around the end and then hangs it from that, but I like this idea. Thanks for sharing. ~ Sarah

  6. HI Nancy, Thanks for fooling around with my button. I have little idea of what I am doing technically, so if you email me the code and what I need to do that would be so great! I will tweet a direct message with my email address.
Wouldn't your green and brown collection look great in my green hutch in NH? I love how you load yours up! Very cool how you hang ladles and spoons. Also, never heard of the disc hangers and i will be getting some. I had a beautiful blue willow platter hit the kitchen floor and smash due to a crummy wire hanger. I still use them as I didn't know what else to use. Thx for the comments friend! I appreciate it!

  9. Nancy, you have some of the most beautiful transferware pieces that I have ever seen. You have such a knack for displaying them. I've never used those disc hangers, but after seeing how you've used them, I think I'll give it a try. Have you used them on bowls before? I have wanted to hang bowls in the past but have been unable with the wire hangers. I also LOVE your cute tassel. I'm going to give this a try myself.

  11. Nancy, I'm always just amazed at how beautiful your transferware is. It is so much nicer in a large grouping like yours.

Love those discs too! They are so much easier and don't scratch the plates.

  13. Nancy, your hutch (or should I say your husband's hutch) is gorgeous!!!! All of your transferware is beautifully arranged and mixed together masterfully! I just keep coming back to this post for another look. This is my kind of decorating- collected and rich and beautiful!

And I am overjoyed with this tutorial! I use wire plate hangers and have not been satisfied with the results. But now I am going to buy these wonderfully disc plate hangers and replace all of the wire ones! What a great and helpful post.
I am going to start a new meme very soon called, "Tips, Tidbits and Tutorials" just for posts like this! Please be looking for it sometime this summer, and post this most helpful information!
I was at your shop looking for "Charlotte" cups and saucers. I could spend a whole afternoon there. Your things are so beautiful!I keep saying "beautiful"... but that's the best adjective!
    Loved my visit today!

  14. Wow , I have never seen these kind of hangers....I would be a little bit afraid of them coming detatched in our humid environment... I wonder. What a beautiful area you have shown here!

  15. Hi Kathryn,

To answer your question, yes these disc hangers can be used on bowls to.

And, to answer nannykim/spindlecottage...they will not come detached due to humidity. It's very humid in Oklahoma and I have used these for as long as I can remember collecting.
Stanley at dischangers.com is very nice and will gladly answer any other questions you all may have.

    Have fun!

  18. Oh Nancy, I have scrolled up and down in this post, just oooing and ahhhing. When I saw the photo of this hutch on my blog for your link up, I couldn't wait to get over here to see, and I wasn't disappointed. All of that beautiful china in one spot just takes my breath. You have arranged it beautifully. What a treat to get to see this. That drink dispenser is incredible! What a great idea the discs are! I've never seen those. Thanks for showing how to use them, and a huge thanks for linking this post to Favorite Things. I loved seeing this. laurie

  19. Nancy-

I don't know where to begin. This has to be one of my all time favorite posts.

Great tutorial on the disks. I've seen them but never used them. With all of the plates I have, they could certainly come in handy. What a great idea to hang the ladels as well. You've got me thinking as to what I can hang that I haven't already. LOL!

Your collection is outstanding. Just beautiful. I know what you mean about the great feeling you get from taking it all down, cleaning it, and putting it all back. I just did that on a tiny little cabinet I have. I was hanging a new mirror above it. I didn't even get to cleaning out the cabinet itself, just the top and it felt (and looked) so good!

Your drink dispenser is simply amazing. I've seen several vintage in blue and white but never anything like yours. Just beautiful.

I also enjoyed your quote at the end of your post. You're so fortunate to be able to work with what you love.

Hope to see you tomorrow at "SUMMER SUNDAYS".
