Polychrome Transferware - Royal Doulton Pomeroy in a Fall Tablescape

I really enjoyed putting this table together tonight...it's on display at my shop, and I'm growing fonder of these plates each day I look at them.  I've featured this pattern before, but in a red polychrome transferware HERE.  Isn't it hard to tell that it is the same pattern?  These six plates are the only ones I've ever seen in this unusually beautiful colorway of a loden green transfer with richly hand painted highlights of burnt oranges/rust, golds and oddly, pink.  But it works.

The pattern is Pomeroy by Royal Doulton and dates to the 1930's.

As is often the case with me, I used a window panel with my table linens.  This one is a mossy green lace with embroidered, deep red roses.   I love to shop my house for things to use in my tablescapes so the panel was perfect.  I pick these up on sale, when I can, for little money and solely with the purpose of using in draping a table.  Generally I won't spend more than $7-10 on a window treatment to be used this way...it's usually quite a bit less than a 'real' tablecloth and I like the scrunched up look.

I created the floral arrangement with silk roses, a Fall-ish looking fern and orange wildflowers which add a a touch of whisp to the arrangement.

The placemats are inexpensive, round woven mats in the same loden green as the plates, but slightly lighter.  The napkins are an orangey jacquard with light gold threading.

Of course the plates are the highlight of the table.  Aren't these stunning?

To give the table a definitive Fall appearance I chose these festive leaf shaped salad plates adorned with a pair of acorns at each end.  I alternated between green and rust colored bowls at each place setting.

The candleholders are brass with amber beaded accents.  Candles are from Zest candles.

Flatware is San Remo by Heritage...or Cambridge...gosh I can't remember! ;-) They have ivory colored handles but paired with the plates and chairs they take on a more golden hue.

These gorgeous glasses are hand made with etched roosters.  They are by April Cornell.
Happy Fall!

A brief history of Royal Doulton:

Renowned as one of the worlds finest producers of tableware, Royal Doulton has a rich history which dates back to 1815 in Lambeth, South London where John Doulton and his partner John Watts established their pottery.
In 1882, Doulton purchased a small factory called Pinder, Bourne & Co, at Nile Street in Burslem, Staffordshire; part of The Potteries, where the Royal Doulton companies reputation flourished.   Tablewares and Art Pottery were being produced alongside industrial ceramics. Also, by 1882, this branch of Doulton's operation was making bone china (porcelain containing bone ash).

Developed by his son Henry Doulton, it became Britain's leading manufacturer of sanitary wares and other industrial ceramics as well as a major producer of art pottery and of ornamental and commemorative pieces, and tablewares.

The Lambeth Studio in London continued in existence until 1956, and until recent years the  Doulton production has been concentrated at Burslem.
Having taken over many of its rivals both in industrial and decorative wares, the Royal Doulton Group was one of the largest manufacturers of ceramics in Britain.

Today, Royal Doulton is owned by the Waterford/Wedgwood group.  As of 2005, the majority of Royal Doulton wares are made in the Far East, and Indonesia.

The Oven Bird
By Robert Frost

There is a singer everyone has heard,
Loud, a mid-summer and a mid-wood bird,
Who makes the solid tree trunks sound again.
He says that leaves are old and that for flowers
Mid-summer is to spring as one to ten.
He says the early petal-fall is past
When pear and cherry bloom went down in showers
On sunny days a moment overcast;
And comes that other fall we name the fall.
He says the highway dust is over all.
The bird would cease and be as other birds
But that he knows in singing not to sing.
The question that he frames in all but words
Is what to make of a diminished thing.

  14. Stunning table, Nancy! My heart just skipped a beat or two while perusing your post...these are, by far, my favorite dishes of any you have shared with us. They are so rich looking with all the greens and oranges. I have tried using curtain panels for table dressing but they still look like panels! Guess I need to have you give me lessons.

  16. This is just a gorgeous fall table. I love some fabric draped in the center of my table too, and this panel adds so much, so delicate and filmy yet perfect. The plates of course are the star, but I love the earthiness of the leaf dishes. Fabulous as always, but this one really stands out.

  24. Beautifully rustic and elegant at the same time. Thanks for the intro to Royal Doulton. I was born in the heart of the Potteries in Staffordshire, and having done my family tree, many of my ancestors were potters in places like Burslem. Hence my own love of fine china.

  25. Hi Nancy,
Although I have no tablescape today, because my first blog party "International Christmas Cookies" kept me busy, I enjoyed your tablescape very much. This Royal Doulton transferware is really very different and the bright and colorful design is just perfect for fall tables. You have set that all to a table, worth for a visit of the Queen. Thank you for showing this wonderful table.
    Greetings, Johanna

I want to know why - when you scrunch fabric it looks beautiful, and when I scrunch, it looks like a wrinkled piece of fabric. Maybe I need a tutorial on scrunching fabric! That stemware is also stunning. I've never seen this china pattern or the stemware pattern. You find such unique and wonderful table accessories. English Cottage Living Room - Before, Partly After & Still a Work in Progress

I am sorry for not posting more pictures of the progress we've made settling into this new (to us) home.   It seems life rushes by so fast and that at times, doing little things, even those that I love and enjoy, often get pushed aside and onto the back shelf of my mind where I tell myself, "I'll get to this later".  Well, it is later and though I don't have as much to share with you as I'd like, I'm going to at least share my favorite spot in our living room.  I promise to show the rest of the room soon but for now the opposite half of the living room has been occupied by my daughters boyfriend who has been staying with us for the past 7 or so weeks until his apartment is ready for him to move into, and so the couch is usually made up for him to sleep on!   Here is a photo of the current living room just as we found it, a small room just off the entry of the house with a nice marble and wood fireplace surround, hard wood floors, beautiful crown mouldi

The History of Johnson Brothers and The Friendly Village Tablescape

Last week, Shawn and I popped into a couple of estate sales and I picked up over 100 pieces of Johnson Brother's The Friendly Village .  I think I may have to hang on to 12 of the dinner plates and use them this year at Thanksgiving but the rest of them, including this 48 piece service for 8, will be you know where. I don't know about you all, but I have had enough of Summer and I am down right ready for the cooler temperatures of Autumn.  I've been doing a lot of rearranging around the house….I'm in one of those zones where I've got a zillion projects going on, even if half of them are just in my mind that I'm contemplating!   We've also been moving kids out and around.  Three of them are out and the three still at home are moving or rearranging their rooms around.    Since I am yearning for Fall, haven't posted any tablescapes in a while and just got these Friendly Village pieces I decided to set the table with them.      Oh great, I

My English Country Mom Cave

Susan, at Between Naps on the Porch is hosting a Home Goods Mom Cave contest with four lucky winners.  Come on in to my little niche I've carved out of my house.  This is where I work, create, relax, read and chat with friends and family. This is one of my favorite spots in the house to read about one of my favorite subjects...English transferware or poetry, and drink tea.  I often start and end my day right here. Next to the chair is an antique dumbwaiter which holds some decorative items as well as lots of poetry books.  This is the view of the room from the wing back chair.  This cozy room serves as a small living room, although it's not uncommon to have 8 or 9 of the girls in here during family gatherings.  It's usually where we all wind up to have coffee and visit. . On either side of the sofa I display some of my vintage Canine figurines on Spode meat drainers. Above the sofa are some of my favorite paintings.  The one directly over the sofa my Mom pain

Decorating with Brown Transferware & $100 GIVEAWAY

Brown was introduced as a transferware color around 1829-30 and is the least expensive of colors to make. Therefore it is fairly common, so far as transferware goes, to find.  It is also one of the most collected colors and it is probably the most versatile of colors in my opinion.  Brown is neutral and looks good with any color scheme from pastels to rich jewel tones, but it is with the ushering in of Autumn that I see it popping up in home decor and vignettes the most.  Though, most of these rooms and vignettes are decorated with brown pieces year round, it just seems the perfect time to share them.  I may have to do another post because there are so, so many more equally beautiful spaces that have incorporated the use of displaying brown transferware  and I can't fit them all here. So, check these lovelies out and then stick around for the giveaway at the bottom of the post. This vignette just stole my heart the first time I saw it.  So many of us have vintage luggage

The Aesthetic Movement and Transferware

What is the Aesthetic Movement? The Aesthetic Movement refers to a period of time in the late 19 th century (1870-1900) which was a backlash to the formal Victorian years.  Artists and writers of the Aesthetic movement period maintained the belief that art should provide refined sensuous pleasure, rather than convey moral or sentimental messages.  They believed that art did not have any didactic purpose; it need only be beautiful.  Japanese art had a great influence on Aestheticism. Aesthetic interiors were often decorated with Japanese prints, screens, fans and other objects. An appreciation of the art of Japan is seen in the work of many Aesthetic artists and designers such as James McNeill Whistler and E.W. Godwin. photo credit Country Living The Aesthetes developed the cult of beauty, which they considered the basic factor in art. They ascertained that life should copy art and considered nature as crude and lacking in design
