Red Transferware and Snowflakes Christmas Hutch, a Winner and Decorating Motivation...or Not

I know you've seen my kitchen hutch a bazillion times but for what it's worth, here it is decorated for Christmas 2012.

Snowflakes are a recurring theme in my Christmas decor this year, especially here on my breakfast room hutch which is chock full of red transferware.
This antique lace piece that hangs over the top of our hutch has always reminded me of snowflakes.  Now especially.

I like to tuck little bits of Christmas amongst the hutch, in the pitchers, ladles and teacups, like this
bottle brush tree set amidst pinecones and faux snow...

...and this glass bird ornament with a pheasant feather tail nesting in the recess of a soup ladle...

...like pinecones nestled into and amongst the red transferware creamers...

...or just a lone little snowflake resting atop a small pitcher.

I like seeing Santa in a suit of snow white.

With Etsy being here to film during October,  I never really got to decorate for Fall like I'd normally do.  I did pull out these little squirrel figurines and since I had not yet tired of seeing them I kept them on my hutch as part of my Christmas display, mixed with some natural elements like pine tree sprigs, pine cones and my favorite bark pillar candles.

I even put a few snowflakes on the wall and hung them from the cabinet handles across the front of the hutch to carry the theme.  Have I ever told you all that this hutch was from Shawn's bedroom when he was a little boy?

I work a lot and it seems that most of the time my work day begins as soon as I get up and ends when I call it quits which typically is just before midnight.  I am having some medical issues and have taken a few trips to the Dr. and lab both last week and continuing into this week.  The combination of these things has made seasonal decorating seem like somewhat of a task this year.  I feel a little guilty for thinking that, and more guilty for admitting it.   Our main Christmas tree still stands stark naked.
Shawn works hard to, though he has been in more of an Archie Bunker mood than a Clark Griswold one lately so his attribution to the Christmas decorating has been this:

It has been a little difficult for me to find motivation for much of anything lately, except maybe to wear one of Shawn's big t-shirts and a pair of his baggy house pants.  At least wearing loose clothes makes you feel skinnier.  Now, that's motivating, right?
I'm glad I can wear his clothes if I want to.  I am more glad that he cannot wear mine...that would be worrisome.

What will the future of our Christmas tree be? Will I find some motivation to do anything to it, other than what I've already done which was decide I did not like where it stood, and so crawled underneath it and carefully (barely) slid it to a new location thus covering myself and the living room floor with an inch thick layer of flocking.   Tune in later to find out...will it go back in the box, stand as is, or be strung up...with lights that is?

  1. Aw, I'm sorry to hear you haven't been feeling well, Nancy. I hope you get your tree decorated, even if it is just a little bit. Your hutch looks great! I love that red transferware and the little bits you've tucked in are wonderful.

  2. Nancy- I think that is the prettiest collection of red transferware I have ever seen in a hutch. I suppose I am too old to be adopted so that I could inherit the collection should you predecease me-which is NOT likely!

I am so sorry that you are having some medical issues- I have had my share of things this past year, too...starting a year ago now-now that I think about it. I can remember my father saying that if you have your health you have everything (he had Parkinsons) and I didn't really "GET IT" back then. I do now. We have been through hubby having brain surgery several years ago and cancer surgery 3 years ago. It all takes it toll-emotionally as well as physically. It is sad when we are too tired to care what we get done, isn't it?

Blessings to you- I hope your health improves greatly. After working in a hospital for years I understand health issues. xo Diana

ps. SO glad to hear your hubby isn't into cross dressing! Good old Kathryn Hepburn paved the way for us to wear men's clothes!

  5. Nancy, the hutch looks festive and no doubt your tree will be soon. I know the feeling of just wanting to crawl into a big shirt and comfy fleece pants and curl up on the sofa by the fire. In fact.......that's just what I'm doing. LOL
Our tree is up and decorated and just a few things left to do around the house. I'm usually not ready this early, but hosting house guests the first week in Dec. pushed me to get it done.
Sorry to hear that you are dealing with some health issues on top of your busy schedule. Take care of yourself and know that I'm thinking of you.........Sarah

  7. Christmas isn't about decorating a tree, is it? There's comfort in that truth. Just love yourself and others--God will work the rest out. Bless you! Kay Moser www.kaymoser.com

  12. Like the others who have responded, I hope you start feeling better soon. Life doesn't always cooperate with us when we want it to, does it?!! And, sometimes the best thing to do is curl up on the sofa with baggy pants and a big shirt and just take a deep breath and relax. Your home is already beautiful, as is your tree. Jane

  15. Girl, don't even trip about the tree and all the decorating and everything else. You have to take care you Y-O-U first! If it gets done, it does. If it doesn't, there's always next year. You have been SO busy the last few months, and you guys both deserve a little break in the action. Everything works out for a reason. Your hutch looks terrific, and the squirrels are perfect pretty much year round, so see...that worked out! Feel better, little woman!

  16. Nancy: I wish I could copy your hutch dish by dish. It is just perfect, perfect, perfect! I do hope you start feeling better real soon. Take it easy and be good to yourself. Even if you can't decorate your home like you want to, go out and look at the decorations in the shops and the lights in the neighborhoods. Then come home and curl up with a good book and a cup of hot cider and rest.

  23. Seeing your lovely hutch decorated with the snowflakes last year motivated me to decorate more with snowflakes. Makes sense as I use alot of snowmen in my decor ;)
When one is dealing with issues that take your mind elsewhere does lessen the joy of doing something like decorating a tree for the holidays but I do hope that you follow through and decorate it. I think it will bring a smile to your face and allow you to focus on something else for a while.
Praying that all goes well with the dr and lab tests.

  24. As always your hutch looks beautiful, Nancy! And I think the squirrels and the log candle are perfect for Christmas. I'm sorry I haven't been here more often lately but I'll be trying to catch up over the next few days. I hope you'll enjoy these last days leading up to Christmas. Be well!

English Cottage Living Room - Before, Partly After & Still a Work in Progress

I am sorry for not posting more pictures of the progress we've made settling into this new (to us) home.   It seems life rushes by so fast and that at times, doing little things, even those that I love and enjoy, often get pushed aside and onto the back shelf of my mind where I tell myself, "I'll get to this later".  Well, it is later and though I don't have as much to share with you as I'd like, I'm going to at least share my favorite spot in our living room.  I promise to show the rest of the room soon but for now the opposite half of the living room has been occupied by my daughters boyfriend who has been staying with us for the past 7 or so weeks until his apartment is ready for him to move into, and so the couch is usually made up for him to sleep on!   Here is a photo of the current living room just as we found it, a small room just off the entry of the house with a nice marble and wood fireplace surround, hard wood floors, beautiful crown mouldi

The History of Johnson Brothers and The Friendly Village Tablescape

Last week, Shawn and I popped into a couple of estate sales and I picked up over 100 pieces of Johnson Brother's The Friendly Village .  I think I may have to hang on to 12 of the dinner plates and use them this year at Thanksgiving but the rest of them, including this 48 piece service for 8, will be you know where. I don't know about you all, but I have had enough of Summer and I am down right ready for the cooler temperatures of Autumn.  I've been doing a lot of rearranging around the house….I'm in one of those zones where I've got a zillion projects going on, even if half of them are just in my mind that I'm contemplating!   We've also been moving kids out and around.  Three of them are out and the three still at home are moving or rearranging their rooms around.    Since I am yearning for Fall, haven't posted any tablescapes in a while and just got these Friendly Village pieces I decided to set the table with them.      Oh great, I

My English Country Mom Cave

Susan, at Between Naps on the Porch is hosting a Home Goods Mom Cave contest with four lucky winners.  Come on in to my little niche I've carved out of my house.  This is where I work, create, relax, read and chat with friends and family. This is one of my favorite spots in the house to read about one of my favorite subjects...English transferware or poetry, and drink tea.  I often start and end my day right here. Next to the chair is an antique dumbwaiter which holds some decorative items as well as lots of poetry books.  This is the view of the room from the wing back chair.  This cozy room serves as a small living room, although it's not uncommon to have 8 or 9 of the girls in here during family gatherings.  It's usually where we all wind up to have coffee and visit. . On either side of the sofa I display some of my vintage Canine figurines on Spode meat drainers. Above the sofa are some of my favorite paintings.  The one directly over the sofa my Mom pain

Decorating with Brown Transferware & $100 GIVEAWAY

Brown was introduced as a transferware color around 1829-30 and is the least expensive of colors to make. Therefore it is fairly common, so far as transferware goes, to find.  It is also one of the most collected colors and it is probably the most versatile of colors in my opinion.  Brown is neutral and looks good with any color scheme from pastels to rich jewel tones, but it is with the ushering in of Autumn that I see it popping up in home decor and vignettes the most.  Though, most of these rooms and vignettes are decorated with brown pieces year round, it just seems the perfect time to share them.  I may have to do another post because there are so, so many more equally beautiful spaces that have incorporated the use of displaying brown transferware  and I can't fit them all here. So, check these lovelies out and then stick around for the giveaway at the bottom of the post. This vignette just stole my heart the first time I saw it.  So many of us have vintage luggage

The Aesthetic Movement and Transferware

What is the Aesthetic Movement? The Aesthetic Movement refers to a period of time in the late 19 th century (1870-1900) which was a backlash to the formal Victorian years.  Artists and writers of the Aesthetic movement period maintained the belief that art should provide refined sensuous pleasure, rather than convey moral or sentimental messages.  They believed that art did not have any didactic purpose; it need only be beautiful.  Japanese art had a great influence on Aestheticism. Aesthetic interiors were often decorated with Japanese prints, screens, fans and other objects. An appreciation of the art of Japan is seen in the work of many Aesthetic artists and designers such as James McNeill Whistler and E.W. Godwin. photo credit Country Living The Aesthetes developed the cult of beauty, which they considered the basic factor in art. They ascertained that life should copy art and considered nature as crude and lacking in design

Decorating with Blue Transferware and a GIVEAWAY!

If you haven't already been over to Enchanted Home , you'll want to go over after you finish this post because the wonderful Tina, who authors the incredibly gorgeous blog,  has a great post up about decorating with dishes plus she's hosting a giveaway to my online shop, English Transferware !  Details at the end of the post! I know Tina loves blue and white (just look at her header and you'll know!) and has a collection of her own. In honor of Tina, I've decided to share some of my favorite images of rooms decorated with and often around blue transferware collections.  You can see more rooms decorated with blue transferware on my Pinterest board . To me, Charles Faudree is just about as synonymous with English transferware as he his with French Country Decorating...he seemed to always find a use for it in his incredibly detailed decorating schemes.  Isn't this bedroom charming? I love this next image from Decor Magazine.  Look how the blu
