Bird Cage & Transferware Tablescape

Don't forget to enter my $40 Gift Certificate Giveaway HERE

This table and tablescape was so fun to create!  I'll post about this unique table in a few days but am sharing my tablescape tonight.  Some of my favorite decorative things are birds, some of my favorite things, as you all know, is transferware and my favorite flowering bush is the hydrangea.   It was so fun creating a table with all three motif's.

The bird cage top is removable to I laid a sheer window curtain across the table...it's a pretty teal green with olive leaves and pink and periwinkle hydrangeas.  I used to have this in my bathroom about 10 years ago.  I have a serious issue with getting rid of things.  I do try...but it doesn't always work out that way, for me.  I did give away some of the matching panels but I held on to this for some reason...and now I'm wishing I had them all! ;-)

Anyway, the window sheer was the perfect thing to bring these pieces together for a pretty Spring table with a real splash of whimsy!  After I put down the sheer, I added a birds nest and some ivy and then placed the bird cage topper over it.   Around the cage I wrapped this ready made lavender and cream budding garland from Decorator's Friend around the base of the cage.  It's made of little paper type buds on wire ends so it's very easy to work with.  I love the airy look of this!

The bird cage topper has four corners so I placed one of each of this set of Garden Warblers around the corners and into the airy garland.  I loosely wove in some gold stamped, olive satin and sheer ribbon for a little extra softness, texture and shimmer.

This set of warblers looks so cute on this Olive green, ironstone transferware platter by J & G Meakin.   What a fun way to display a platter and some sweet birds.  I just added some gold pip berries
to the platter and set the little birdies atop.  Both these came from Decorator's Friend.  They have a large assortment of inexpensive, pretty bird figurines and the berries come in a tube for under $5 with lots of color options!
I found the perfect, hand painted wine glasses by Jeanne at...get this name... A Stroke of Jeanne-ius.  I love that shop name!  Jeanne owns an Etsy shop and has a wonderful assortment of hand painted stemware, cheese domes and more in lots of motif's from fruit and flowers, to elegant damasks.  Everyone that's seen the hydrangea glasses has commented on them!  They're so pretty and unique!  These have a pretty variegated pink hydrangea bloom with gold accents.   She has a great set right now with cherries and it's so cute for summer!

These wine glasses are perfect tealight holders too...I just filled them with some of the Gold Pip Berries and placed my tealight (in a closed container) on top.  I also put this in one of Decorator's Friend lavender and cream budding wreath's...isn't this pretty?  I love candlelight...any time, any place!  It's so romantic and adds that perfectly soft touch...and mood!

I put one of the lavender wreaths on the back of a chair and wove in some opalescent organza garland from Always Elegant.  The vintage tablecloth draped over the chair came from Creative Juices Studios.

I set the table with some J & G Meakin olive transferware bread/dessert plates that have a scrolled leaf and vine pattern.
These also make cute pillar or votive candle holders.  Here I placed some of the pip berries and a bird on the plate, added a recycled candle holder filled with more pip berries and placed a small votive inside.

These vintage pink damask napkins were a garage sale find...a set of 8 for $5.  They are pristine!  Instead of napkin rings I opted to tuck them into these vintage inspire tin hanging cones.  I found these at Decorator's Friend as well.  They are the perfect shade of green with little golden highlights and a nice, aged looking patina.  I love using things in unexpected ways!
The antique transferware periwinkle plates are in the Asiatic Pheasants pattern...one which was produced by a large number of potters.  These are a little unique in that the color is not blue, nor purple and these are Swedish by Gustafsberg.    The color reminds me of the blue form of hydrangeas...my all time favorite!  I used to have my bedroom painted this color.

I can't wait to tell you all more about this table on another post!  It was so much fun!

  8. Wow! That table is so unique! I wasn't sure what you meant when you first said "the top of the cage came off, so you put a cloth under it" but at the end, I see! The plate of birdies is so cute - I think I have some of the same ones. Very pretty transferware and tablecloth too!

  23. Nancy, I adore this table. I love all the details, but especially the runner and the handpainted stemware. They complements each other so perfect. Your transferware is always stunning and the little birdies are cute and makes a marvellously summer atmosphere. And they are as subject to the cage theme simply indispensible.

  32. Beautiful Nancy...I love those plates! But tell us how do you come up with these combinations? Does it all come together naturally as you layer and go along, or do you have a plan and then you execute? I tend to get a basic idea and then it all comes pouring out...until voila, I am finished. Curious what your creative process is!

  50. Hi Tablescaper,

I should have clarified about my bedroom paint...it was at my old house that I had it painted a pale periwinkle...otherwise I probably wouldn't change it! I love the color!

  51. Hi Amy,

I think it's a mix of both for me...I get a general idea and then it just starts coming together. Originally I had something completely different planned for this tablescape (still do but it will be another table). I knew I wanted to use the hydrangea glasses with the window sheer and then I just started playing...and well, here you have it!

English Cottage Living Room - Before, Partly After & Still a Work in Progress

I am sorry for not posting more pictures of the progress we've made settling into this new (to us) home.   It seems life rushes by so fast and that at times, doing little things, even those that I love and enjoy, often get pushed aside and onto the back shelf of my mind where I tell myself, "I'll get to this later".  Well, it is later and though I don't have as much to share with you as I'd like, I'm going to at least share my favorite spot in our living room.  I promise to show the rest of the room soon but for now the opposite half of the living room has been occupied by my daughters boyfriend who has been staying with us for the past 7 or so weeks until his apartment is ready for him to move into, and so the couch is usually made up for him to sleep on!   Here is a photo of the current living room just as we found it, a small room just off the entry of the house with a nice marble and wood fireplace surround, hard wood floors, beautiful crown mouldi

The History of Johnson Brothers and The Friendly Village Tablescape

Last week, Shawn and I popped into a couple of estate sales and I picked up over 100 pieces of Johnson Brother's The Friendly Village .  I think I may have to hang on to 12 of the dinner plates and use them this year at Thanksgiving but the rest of them, including this 48 piece service for 8, will be you know where. I don't know about you all, but I have had enough of Summer and I am down right ready for the cooler temperatures of Autumn.  I've been doing a lot of rearranging around the house….I'm in one of those zones where I've got a zillion projects going on, even if half of them are just in my mind that I'm contemplating!   We've also been moving kids out and around.  Three of them are out and the three still at home are moving or rearranging their rooms around.    Since I am yearning for Fall, haven't posted any tablescapes in a while and just got these Friendly Village pieces I decided to set the table with them.      Oh great, I

My English Country Mom Cave

Susan, at Between Naps on the Porch is hosting a Home Goods Mom Cave contest with four lucky winners.  Come on in to my little niche I've carved out of my house.  This is where I work, create, relax, read and chat with friends and family. This is one of my favorite spots in the house to read about one of my favorite subjects...English transferware or poetry, and drink tea.  I often start and end my day right here. Next to the chair is an antique dumbwaiter which holds some decorative items as well as lots of poetry books.  This is the view of the room from the wing back chair.  This cozy room serves as a small living room, although it's not uncommon to have 8 or 9 of the girls in here during family gatherings.  It's usually where we all wind up to have coffee and visit. . On either side of the sofa I display some of my vintage Canine figurines on Spode meat drainers. Above the sofa are some of my favorite paintings.  The one directly over the sofa my Mom pain

Decorating with Brown Transferware & $100 GIVEAWAY

Brown was introduced as a transferware color around 1829-30 and is the least expensive of colors to make. Therefore it is fairly common, so far as transferware goes, to find.  It is also one of the most collected colors and it is probably the most versatile of colors in my opinion.  Brown is neutral and looks good with any color scheme from pastels to rich jewel tones, but it is with the ushering in of Autumn that I see it popping up in home decor and vignettes the most.  Though, most of these rooms and vignettes are decorated with brown pieces year round, it just seems the perfect time to share them.  I may have to do another post because there are so, so many more equally beautiful spaces that have incorporated the use of displaying brown transferware  and I can't fit them all here. So, check these lovelies out and then stick around for the giveaway at the bottom of the post. This vignette just stole my heart the first time I saw it.  So many of us have vintage luggage

The Aesthetic Movement and Transferware

What is the Aesthetic Movement? The Aesthetic Movement refers to a period of time in the late 19 th century (1870-1900) which was a backlash to the formal Victorian years.  Artists and writers of the Aesthetic movement period maintained the belief that art should provide refined sensuous pleasure, rather than convey moral or sentimental messages.  They believed that art did not have any didactic purpose; it need only be beautiful.  Japanese art had a great influence on Aestheticism. Aesthetic interiors were often decorated with Japanese prints, screens, fans and other objects. An appreciation of the art of Japan is seen in the work of many Aesthetic artists and designers such as James McNeill Whistler and E.W. Godwin. photo credit Country Living The Aesthetes developed the cult of beauty, which they considered the basic factor in art. They ascertained that life should copy art and considered nature as crude and lacking in design

Decorating with Blue Transferware and a GIVEAWAY!

If you haven't already been over to Enchanted Home , you'll want to go over after you finish this post because the wonderful Tina, who authors the incredibly gorgeous blog,  has a great post up about decorating with dishes plus she's hosting a giveaway to my online shop, English Transferware !  Details at the end of the post! I know Tina loves blue and white (just look at her header and you'll know!) and has a collection of her own. In honor of Tina, I've decided to share some of my favorite images of rooms decorated with and often around blue transferware collections.  You can see more rooms decorated with blue transferware on my Pinterest board . To me, Charles Faudree is just about as synonymous with English transferware as he his with French Country Decorating...he seemed to always find a use for it in his incredibly detailed decorating schemes.  Isn't this bedroom charming?
