Decorating with Vintage Clutches

For as long as I can remember I've displayed these vintage, beaded clutches that belonged to my Grandmothers somewhere in our home, usually in the powder room.

I enjoy having things around that remind me of my Grandma's and I like to think about the different places and events they'd carry these little hand held purses to.

I am really sentimental when it comes to these things. Are you?  Do any of you have a little collection of purses that you like to display?  What, if anything, do you display in your home that belonged to your Mother or Grandmother?

The powder room in this house is small and has no cabinet or shelf space at all so I decided to hang them on the wall with a grouping of framed pictures.

Above the toilet, I have a pretty barley twist cabinet and I've got a little reproduction purse that hangs from the handle.

I plan to show you around this powder room later but didn't have time tonight,  I'll show you al linside the little curio as well...one of my very, very favorite pieces of transferware is in there!

  1. Love, love, love your posting! I am really into transferware but I don't have near the wonderful collection you have. You made me realize that I have some little vignettes that I should blog about that are made up of items that belonged to my grandmother. Thanks for the inspiration!!
    Happy Thanksgiving!

  4. What a great way to display those clutches, Nancy! Love that curio ~ it's a beauty in its own right. Your transferware inside is a bonus! I don't have any of my grandmothers' things on display, but I do have a few pieces of their jewelry ~ stuff they wore everyday and that make me stop and think of them whenever I open my jewelry box.

  5. Wow...what a clever way to display those beautiful clutches!! I love it. How do you have them stay up with out damaging them? I've seen some really cute hats framed out on the wall and I thought that made such a cute statement, especially in a little girls room. Anyway, it's absolutely beautiful!!

  8. Hi Nancy,
Love your vintage purses, so romantic! I am always on the look out for them, and have a few, but I am not so lucky to have any of my Grandmothers, they are a wondeful keepsake!!

  9. I display -- and use! -- family heirlooms in nearly every room of my cottage. I think being a caretaker of the past is one of the most important duties a person can fulfill. It doesn't matter if it's your past, your family's, or the past of strangers who previously owned the second-hand items we accumulate here and there. I truly enjoy looking over your site each day and seeing all the lovely items you care for.

  10. So beautiful!! I always wonder about the history of the item and user too. :-) I have one of my grandmother's forks that an aunt framed in a shadow box with velvet background. There were 9 kids/spouses plus tons of granchildren and greats so this was one way of sharing. I also have her rocker which I treasure! She was a hero in my life and I still miss her daily.

  12. OH I love your purses! And especially love how you displayed them on the wall -- that is SO pretty! I've started gathering a few vintage purses but I do have one that is gold metal and black velvet that was my mom's. I use it for special occasions -- I'll have to post pics sometime.

  14. Just this past month my mom gave me one of her beaded purses she used in attending festive occasions. I have it hanging next to my bedroom dresser. I also have a couple I used back in the 1970's and 1980's.

I few years ago I posted about some items given to me by my mom which I had mounted in a framed collage in my bedroom:

  15. Your blog is sooo pretty! Love the idea with the little clutches, better than having them in a drawer or box somewhere!
