Help Choose My New Logo, A Giveaway & Bragging About & Thanks to My Famous Niece!

By now, most of you know I've moved my shop from Etsy to my own website, Nancy's Daily Dish.   Temporarily the website is set up with a basic template but the new design should be installed around the middle of the month.   I feel like a little kid waiting for Christmas while anticipating its launch.

I asked (sent a weepy FB message to) my advertising executive niece, Tiffany Rolfe, partner at Co:Collective for some much needed direction on web design, etc.  She has a background in web design and is now an industry leader in the advertising world so I thought who could be better to ask?    She is doing more than advising me, but helping put the whole website together in her spare time, while she's at home with her new born baby Myla…the newest addition to our family, born on Jonah's birthday!  Isn't she so precious?  I am obsessed with her name, Myla Pearl.  Too sweet.

Tiffany is very well known throughout the advertising world.  Her work has been featured on the covers of major publications like The New York Times, The Huffington Post, the Wall Street Journal, Salon, Advertising Age, Adweek and others.

You've probably seen many of my nieces ad campaigns on television as she works with Fortune 500 companies like Google, You Tube, Old Navy, Microsoft, GE, Victorias Secret, American Express, BMW, Mini Cooper, Volkswagen, Ikea, Virgin Atlantic Airways, and more than I can possibly name off the top of my head.

Here is Tiff looking very mannequin-ish for a magazine shoot about her Old Navy ads for which she was creative director.  She also led the pitch on this $200 million account!  (image credit Kevin Knight)

In addition to her uber impressive slew of clientele, Tiffany has not only served as juror for most major awards shows, but she has herself garnered nearly, if not, every major advertising award in the world from several Grand Prix's to the first ever given Titanium Lion at Cannes, the most prestigious international annual advertising and communications awards in the world.  Advertising Age named her as "Women to Watch" in 2009 and Young Guns named her as one of the top 10 Creatives of the Decade in 2010.  I could go on and on about the dozens and dozens of accolades she has won or been named for or the famous ads she has directed.  Most recently, she moderated a chat at Cannes with David Karp, tumblr. founder!

Here is my 6 month pregnant niece, Tiff,  this past June at Cannes in a sit down chat she moderated with tumblr. founder, David Karp. ( image credit seen.com )

So you get the picture, basically I'm saying she is the rock star of the advertising world.   Like I said, Tiff does work for Fortune 500 companies so when she jumped in to help me with my website; my itty bitty, more like an In The Red 500 company =), I could not have been more excited, or proud, to have her help.  Nor could I be more in need because I have no idea what I am doing.  I am truly grateful, Tiffany!

My daughters, Kalyn and Ashton, and some of my nieces including Tiffany (turkey head) at Thanksgiving one year.  Tiffany decked all the girls out with Old Navy duds.  I can't remember how the mustache's got brought out.  All I can say is that it's not unusual for my family to do this sort of thing!

When I first discussed my website with Tiffany she logged onto my site and said, "I'm not judging" which is her polite way of telling me how crappy it looked.   I mentioned my logo, my homemade logo, and asked her advice on what I should do with it.  I didn't want to change it too much because I feel I've established the transferware hands to the blog about transferware.  Tiff agreed, saying that she thought the hands were "iconic and they say to your readers that this is your offering".  She summed up exactly how I feel about those hands and why I chose them in the first place.  They are my small offering of what I know about transferware and want to share with everyone.  So, we agreed that the design really just needed to be freshened up.  I call it updated vintage.  I like that it's simple, fresh and clean but still easily recognizable as Nancy's Daily Dish.  I would really appreciate your two cents worth as well.  So, my question to you all is which logo do you like best?

Do you like the first one with the hands inside the frame and excluding the tag line 'with an emphasis on English transferware'?

Or do you like the second one below with the hands overlapping the frame and including the tag line?

Or would you choose the first one with hands inside the frame but WITH the tag line below?

I thought it would be fun to have a giveaway to my shop as part of the voting so I've decided to give one gift certificate good for up to $50 at my website, nancysdailydish.net.  We are still in the process of listing everything to the new site and have about 900 pieces thus far, so lots to choose from with lots of English transferware finds added every day!

First entry: Just leave a comment with your logo choice, 1, 2, or 3 and/or any other suggestions you'd like to see on the site.
Second entry:  leave an additional comment on what you'd spend the $50 on from my shop along with the link to it.
Third Entry: either blog, facebook or tweet the giveaway and post  the link to your blog post, FB, Tweet, etc.  That's it.  I'll close the giveaway in a week and announce a random winner then.

Thank you so much for participating and giving your opinions which I value greatly!

    Logo #2, absolutely!!

  8. What a talented niece you have, and what a precious baby in pink she has!

I'm glad you are only updating your logo, as I have always found it attractive. It seems important to keep English transferware in the logo, in order to specify what "dish" means, so I vote for the number two logo, which is especially lovely!

Choosing one favorite piece of transferware is almost impossible! The Royal Doulton Chatham is still tempting me, but I would have to go with the Spode Byron teapot! So cute! http://nancysdailydish.net/collections/brown-transferware/products/spode-byron-brown-transferware-tea-pot-teapot-polychrome-man-on-horse-dogs-hunter-english-hunt-scene-vintage-spode-china-tea-drinker-gift

  10. Wow, who would not love a gift certificate to your shop? I know I would! What would I buy.....well, I could probably close my eyes and point, and be happy with any of your lovelies. As for your updated logo, I am soooo glad you are keeping the 'hands'..... they are iconic. The majority seem to favor #2, but I've never been one to follow the crowd, sooooo I actually do not have a preference. Both are nice, as long as the hand is included, and I'd probably ask the professional helping me which one she thinks works best! Best wishes on this exciting new endeavor. Thanks for sharing. 11. OMG! Definitely #2, the hands seem to just reach out to you, really grabbed my attention. What a beautiful talented niece you have, her daughter is so very sweet, love the bunny outfit she is sporting! Patty/BC

  12. I agree, #2......yes, the hands seem to reach out to you and it make it more personal. Also love that baby!!!

I would love that gift to your shop......anything in red or brown......too numerous to mention!!! Best of luck to you Nancy, and many blessings!!! Cleo....

  13. Absolutely, no question about it - the second one. Love, love, love the hands outside the box with the tag line. It is as if the hands are extending to the tag line, so it flows very nicely! Thanks for asking for my opinion. Most of my adult life was spent in advertising and designing ads, so congrats to your niece! It is always wonderful to see women making it in yet, another, previously male dominated arena.

  17. One of your blog posts featured a Christmas tablescape using all different red & white plates and I haven't stopped dreaming about it since! I have looked at your site so many times trying to figure out which of the red & white toile plates I should purchase. 18. I do really like #2--I like the way the hands fit and "peek" over the edge of the frame--such a beautiful piece. If I was so very lucky to win this give away I would pick a piece of Red Transferware--my favorite color. But then again--I would love to start collecting Brown also...

  22. Of the two options shown, I like #2 much better. I'd also consider doing a third option in a horizontal format. Still keep your double lined rectangle but make it shorter & wider -- have the hands on the left, overlapping lines top & bottom, your blog name "Nancy's Daily Dish" to the right and below it your tag line. I'd also consider modifying the tag line just wee bit to something along the lines of "Sharing a Passion for English Transferware"; that language uses more "active" words than your current tagline which is more "passive"

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree that a horizontal logo might also be effective and using active words rather than passive will express your love of transferware. Since I have a piece of brown, perhaps another would be a good choice to begin a collection.

  24. Nancy, what an accomplished young woman in her field, and now a busy mom too. Congratulations to Tiffany on the birth of her beautiful daughter.
I cast my vote for #2. It's a beautiful logo that reflects your offerings. The message is very clear!

  25. Hello and Congrats! Lovely to see all your success and the new web site. I know how you feel, I was so excited to see the culmination of my web site, too! Like Christmas morning! I'm sorry, I can't go to the web site and just pick one type, color, style or piece - I truly love it all!!! I am loving brown transfer ware right now, though. So, any brown piece would make me giddy! Lol I have to say about your web site logo that I love the picture below the transfer ware hands, (although I love those, too!) the picture of all the eclectic pieces and colors & styles; I think shows more of a taste of all that you offer. You would have to adjust it to fit your name somewhere, but that is easily done, I'm sure. Maybe it's time for a fresh new look? I love the picture, it's colorful, fresh & interesting, it makes you want to see more! Thanks for the opportunity to weigh in and for the giveaway!

  31. From PeggyB......I like #2...however...I would make the inner frame red (or blue or yellow)..it needs a little background color......so the hands stand out more and can be seen clearly....the lettering for the title ....Nancy's Dish could be changed to white lettering....or what suite of colors coordinate with the background....just what I see. Love your site!

  36. I like #2 with the hands going over the lines. It draws you in a bit. I'm a graphic designer and I don't like to stay within the lines on anything! And I always like a tag line. It gives you a chance to further define your brand. I love transferware! My mom said I inherited her "glass gene"! I would probably spend my $50 on the polychrome green transfer ware plates with the hand painted flowers. I think that would work great in our dining room with our Autumn plaid silk drapes.

  37. It took two cups of tea to go through your lovely site! I found it through Mary at "Home is Where the Boat is". I would select logo #2...professional and beautiful...and very welcoming with the transferware hands. If I won the contest I would select the Charles Dickens "Old Curiosity Shop" charger. My 81 year old father used to own an antique store called "The Old Curiosity Shop". I love Charles Dickens novels!

  43. Made a post but don't see it so I'll try again :) I love the second logo the best. It is very professional yet welcoming! My pick if I were to be a $50 winner would be the Charles Dickens "Old Curiosity Shop" charger. My 81 y/o Dad used to own an Antique shop with the same name. I'm also a huge Charles Dickens fan. I found your blog through Mary at "Home is Where the Boat is". I spent some of my morning sipping tea and flipping through your inventory photos...beautiful! There are so many I love! I've shared your post on my facebook page as well. Merry Christmas!

  44. I think I should have added to this my vote, above, but previously you did a post about a Christmas tablescape that you did with all different red & white toile plates. I haven't stopped dreaming of it since! So for me it would have to be: http://nancysdailydish.net/collections/red-transferware/products/red-pink-transferware-scenic-plate-church-children-horses-roses I am partial to scalloped plates, so I would start with this one and keep adding until I have recreated the same look you had. Posted this on my FB page here: https://www.facebook.com/bobbie.beach. And my vote is a previous comment above - Hue New Painted Furniture.

  45. Number 1 is nice, but I miss the "With an emphasis on English Transfer Ware". Number 2 is pretty, but something bout the hands overlapping the frame does not appeal to me. This may not be the feedback for which you were looking, but it is simply my impression of the proposed logos. The open hands not only represent what you are offering, but welcome visitors to your site with open hands. Best wishes for your re-launch.

  46. On a different topic, the small bull vessel you recently featured on a tablescape reminded me of a Boehm Bull I saw many years ago in Florence, Italy. He is such a unique and lovely piece and you are lucky to own him.

And aren't you lucky to have your amazing niece on your side!! Congratulations! Baby is just charming in her pink winter outfit, I see her mama is batting a thousand with her as well!! Good luck, I just found your blog for the first time, so I'm off to your shop to take a look now, because I LOVE transferware!

Secondly, it is wonderful how God is blessing you in acquiring a first rate advertising wizard, and within the family no less :-) thirdly, i started out in brown transferware at the shop, then moved to blue and am sorely tempted to scour the purples. A girl could get lost in transer-world over there! But if i won i think i would buy the blue calico chintz butter dish or laughing cow/bull. Suzi pblapere@att.net

  61. I prefer the second logo with the hands parting the border. Feels like you are making a way for those of us who have not yet ventured into the waters of dish world. I have learned so much from your blog. I also like that it says below that your emphasis is transferware below because it doesn't limit you from growing in the future and adding new lines. Suzi pblapere@att.net

  62. I like the second logo better, however, I think a subtle neutral color behind it would make the hands stand out. As they are now, they just sort of blend into the background and lose all their personality.

  63. I'm looking for a red or green plate with a transfer of Monticello on it. Haven't had a chance to look through all your "goodies" yet, but that's what I'm looking for.

  64. Hi Nancy, Congratulations to your niece on her successful career and her beautiful baby, too! I think I like logo # 2 a little better--it seems softer and more welcoming. I remember the night I found out your etsy shop was gone. All my "favorites" from your shop had disappeared from my favorites folder! I would love to see that feature on your new website, so I could collect my favorites and compare and drool over them. Also, we used to be able to see how many of a particular item were available, and that information is not included now in the description. Finally, I love the pretty font underneath each picture (in bold) but I find it very difficult to read. This may just be me. Of course I will continue to look at all your pretties! Best of luck with your new site! Linda

  72. Hi Nancy,
My first visit your blog! I do adore transfer ware.... especially brown and black!

Since you want feedback I will give you my humble opinion...
I have 3 thoughts to share
    1. Love the hand
    2. I think there is a better font choice & color. I think a soft brown or grey.
3 Loose the lines/boxes they take away from the simple beauty of the logo.
    Image,name &tagline only!
I can't wait to check back to see what you come up with! How fun you can work with your niece on this!
I would love you to visit me sometime! Please feel free to give me your feedback on my blog! What would you like to see. I have some remodeling plans for mine as well!
    Merry Christmas!

I would buy something in either the blue or the brown, as I have some inherited pieces in each. A couple of them in the blue, are REALLY old. I'm sure I could find something!!!

  81. I would love to spend my fifty dollars on this Red Transferware Plate Bridge Castle Fisherman Toile Plate - Fishing Scene - English Transferware http://nancysdailydish.net/collections/red-transferware/products/red-transferware-plate-bridge-castle-fisherman-toile-plate-fishing-scene-english-transferware

  82. I like #2--seems a bit more modern to have hands overlapping bottom line. I would love to add green transferware bread plates to my collection.

  83. I think #2 is a more modern and appealing logo (I like the hands overlapping the lines). I would love to get some green transferware bread plates.

  84. I would spend the gift certificate on any one of your teacups or teapots. I love the Vintage English China Purple Transferware!

  85. I am voting for #2 also. I think the hands outside the box gives an edge of sophistication. Best wishes on your website launch.

  86. Nancy, got pulled away the other day and just now getting back after having time to really look through all your beautiful offerings. You know me and my love of brown. I'd spend it on the set of napkin rings: http://nancysdailydish.net/products/english-transferware-brown-calico-chintz-floral-napkin-rings-rare-set-of-4
They are different from my others and would mix together nicely.
All the best to you on the new website. It looks great! Bet this is a busy time for your business, but hope you can take some time to relax and enjoy the holidays with your sweet family. ~ Sarah

  87. Nancy I really like the second one because of the wording
I don't know what I would choose if I won some kind of red & white transferware to go with what I have

You have it really going on with your beautiful English dishes
    The new baby is precious

    Merry Christmas

  88. I AM VERY HAPPY FOR YOU -- A WONDERFUL ACCOMPLISHMENT!

MY PREFERENCE FOR YOUR LOGO WOULD BE THE SECOND CHOICE. IT HAS MORE DIMENSION, CHARM AND LIFE.

A FEATURE THAT MIGHT PROVE USEFUL WOULD BE A WAY FOR YOUR CLIENTS TO COMPARE SEVERAL PIECES THEY MIGHT BE CONSIDERING. IT'S DIFFICULT TO KEEP SO MANY ITEMS IN YOUR MIND. OF COURSE, YOU CAN USE THE CART TO DO THIS AS WELL, BUT IT WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE A DEDICATED WAY TO COMPARE.

AS FOR HOW I COULD SPEND $50, I WOULD LIKELY SELECT THE MT. VERNON PLATES YOU HAVE OR THE LARGE TRAY THAT I BELIEVE DEPICTS MT. VERNON AS WELL.

I HAVE BEEN A FAN FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS NOW AND WISH YOU THE VERY BEST OF LUCK WITH THIS NEW VENTURE!

  89. First of all, Nancy, your little grand niece is adorable! And what a wonderful career your neice has had, and how lucky you are to have her helping you! I'm sure she is happy to do so, and it must be fun working on it with her. I think I prefer the 2nd image.... it seems cleaner, lighter. And I like that the hands overspill the frame, slightly. I wish you all the best with all that's new in your life! It must be exciting, overwhelming and have your mind spinning, all at once!

English Cottage Living Room - Before, Partly After & Still a Work in Progress

I am sorry for not posting more pictures of the progress we've made settling into this new (to us) home.   It seems life rushes by so fast and that at times, doing little things, even those that I love and enjoy, often get pushed aside and onto the back shelf of my mind where I tell myself, "I'll get to this later".  Well, it is later and though I don't have as much to share with you as I'd like, I'm going to at least share my favorite spot in our living room.  I promise to show the rest of the room soon but for now the opposite half of the living room has been occupied by my daughters boyfriend who has been staying with us for the past 7 or so weeks until his apartment is ready for him to move into, and so the couch is usually made up for him to sleep on!   Here is a photo of the current living room just as we found it, a small room just off the entry of the house with a nice marble and wood fireplace surround, hard wood floors, beautiful crown mouldi

The History of Johnson Brothers and The Friendly Village Tablescape

Last week, Shawn and I popped into a couple of estate sales and I picked up over 100 pieces of Johnson Brother's The Friendly Village .  I think I may have to hang on to 12 of the dinner plates and use them this year at Thanksgiving but the rest of them, including this 48 piece service for 8, will be you know where. I don't know about you all, but I have had enough of Summer and I am down right ready for the cooler temperatures of Autumn.  I've been doing a lot of rearranging around the house….I'm in one of those zones where I've got a zillion projects going on, even if half of them are just in my mind that I'm contemplating!   We've also been moving kids out and around.  Three of them are out and the three still at home are moving or rearranging their rooms around.    Since I am yearning for Fall, haven't posted any tablescapes in a while and just got these Friendly Village pieces I decided to set the table with them.      Oh great, I

My English Country Mom Cave

Susan, at Between Naps on the Porch is hosting a Home Goods Mom Cave contest with four lucky winners.  Come on in to my little niche I've carved out of my house.  This is where I work, create, relax, read and chat with friends and family. This is one of my favorite spots in the house to read about one of my favorite subjects...English transferware or poetry, and drink tea.  I often start and end my day right here. Next to the chair is an antique dumbwaiter which holds some decorative items as well as lots of poetry books.  This is the view of the room from the wing back chair.  This cozy room serves as a small living room, although it's not uncommon to have 8 or 9 of the girls in here during family gatherings.  It's usually where we all wind up to have coffee and visit. . On either side of the sofa I display some of my vintage Canine figurines on Spode meat drainers. Above the sofa are some of my favorite paintings.  The one directly over the sofa my Mom pain

Decorating with Brown Transferware & $100 GIVEAWAY

Brown was introduced as a transferware color around 1829-30 and is the least expensive of colors to make. Therefore it is fairly common, so far as transferware goes, to find.  It is also one of the most collected colors and it is probably the most versatile of colors in my opinion.  Brown is neutral and looks good with any color scheme from pastels to rich jewel tones, but it is with the ushering in of Autumn that I see it popping up in home decor and vignettes the most.  Though, most of these rooms and vignettes are decorated with brown pieces year round, it just seems the perfect time to share them.  I may have to do another post because there are so, so many more equally beautiful spaces that have incorporated the use of displaying brown transferware  and I can't fit them all here. So, check these lovelies out and then stick around for the giveaway at the bottom of the post. This vignette just stole my heart the first time I saw it.  So many of us have vintage luggage

The Aesthetic Movement and Transferware

What is the Aesthetic Movement? The Aesthetic Movement refers to a period of time in the late 19 th century (1870-1900) which was a backlash to the formal Victorian years.  Artists and writers of the Aesthetic movement period maintained the belief that art should provide refined sensuous pleasure, rather than convey moral or sentimental messages.  They believed that art did not have any didactic purpose; it need only be beautiful.  Japanese art had a great influence on Aestheticism. Aesthetic interiors were often decorated with Japanese prints, screens, fans and other objects. An appreciation of the art of Japan is seen in the work of many Aesthetic artists and designers such as James McNeill Whistler and E.W. Godwin. photo credit Country Living The Aesthetes developed the cult of beauty, which they considered the basic factor in art. They ascertained that life should copy art and considered nature as crude and lacking in design

Decorating with Blue Transferware and a GIVEAWAY!

If you haven't already been over to Enchanted Home , you'll want to go over after you finish this post because the wonderful Tina, who authors the incredibly gorgeous blog,  has a great post up about decorating with dishes plus she's hosting a giveaway to my online shop, English Transferware !  Details at the end of the post! I know Tina loves blue and white (just look at her header and you'll know!) and has a collection of her own. In honor of Tina, I've decided to share some of my favorite images of rooms decorated with and often around blue transferware collections.  You can see more rooms decorated with blue transferware on my Pinterest board . To me, Charles Faudree is just about as synonymous with English transferware as he his with French Country Decorating...he seemed to always find a use for it in his incredibly detailed decorating schemes.  Isn't this bedroom charming? I love this next image from Decor Magazine.  Look how the blu
