A Fall Tablescape with Blue Transferware and a Poem of Mine

Recently I received a question about a Fall tablescape using blue dishes.  I put this setting together for Garden of Daisies
I hope this gives you some ideas for combining your blue dishes with oranges and traditional Fall colors!

Orange and blue are opposites on the color wheel so they are naturally complementary.
The complement of each primary color (red, blue, or yellow) is basically the color made by mixing the other two which equals:
red complements green (blue and yellow combined)
blue complements orange (red and yellow combined)
yellow complements violet (red + blue combined)

If you follow my blog then you probably know I love layering and using a combination of materials and textures in my tablescapes and decorating.  I chose a miniature Persian rug on the table as it had a perfect combination of colors I was wanted to work with.

Royal Cauldon blue Polychrome transferware plates serve as chargers having a beautiful, solid off-white embossed border.  These were placed on dark brown, woven leather placemats.

Over that I added Royal Staffordshire Tonquin, shallow blue salad bowls

and then topped it with vintage miniature soup tureens in an orange-ish sienna.  I love the little lion head handles on these!

Around the table I continued pulling in colors from the miniature rug.  Light blue Heritage footed iced tea glasses, rocks glasses and water glasses sit atop rug coasters.

Next to each setting I placed blue transferware egg cups on Heritage glass coasters filled with single mums and acorn leaves.   Orange-amber colored glass votives with tealights add a little ambiance to each setting.

My centerpiece is a melange of items including a blue transferware pitcher filled with flowers and berries of different sorts, moss topiaries set in brown and blue transferware, tall candle holders...one holds a moss topiary and the other this gorgeous pillar candle with a cutout design in a contrasting color and amber rhinestones embedded around it.  I almost forgot, my little melange also has a Ridgways Aesthetic Movement Polychrome compote with yet another little topiary and some faux chocolates.  This compote has both the blues and oranges over the brown transfer.

I'll let you all finish browsing the table....(which you can also purhase HERE)

Of Three Are We

Red, blue and yellow
Primarily are we
Colors blend to emulate
So secondarily you can see

Red meets blue makes purple
~lavender swaying in the breeze
Blue meets yellow makes green
-rooftops on our trees
Yellow meets red makes orange
~sunshine now at ease

Red, blue and yellow meet black and white
Hence each shade and hue a birth-
Every color between day and night
And we, the three, were first born
When God created earth

  7. Sending a sweet hello from Frog Hollow Farm. You certainly did a wonderful job integrating the blue dishes into your fall tablescape - I really love what you did. I have several sets of vintage blue transferware dishes and never know how to include them in my table settings. Your post helped me think a bit outside the box and work with color rather than only the stereotypical seasonal colors. Thank you! Ciao, bella!

  8. You see, you are just so darn creative! =] Very beautiful! Harder than matching colors is matching associations. The rug is just a brilliant association - warm, homey, rich.....

btw, your store is really filling in - it's just beautiful!

    Love, Katy

  17. Hi! I just hopped over from Courtney's party and OH MY GOODNESS! That is one of the most gorgeous table settings I have ever seen and its not just because I have such an affinity for blue and white. I would never have thought of putting it with orange but now I might just muster up the courage to give it a try! Thanks for the wonderful inspiration!

  20. I think it shows how versatile transferware can be. Orange makes the blue feel more modern in a way as well as fallish. I love seeing what you come up with every time. Nice poem too!

  27. Nancy, I have a collection of blue-ware myself and I love paring it with almost EVERY color! Can you describe that lovely cloth (placemat?) that is not the rug coasters but the blue/beige one with the fringed edges? I just love it and I'm a textile nut as you know. On a personal note, I have to thank you because my stats are showing that my blog is getting so many page views referred from YOU'RE site! From the bottom of my heart - THANK YOU!!! Also, can you email me? My computer died recently and I no longer have your email. I'm still @ jamiesoninteriors@verizon.net I'd love to catch up a bit! I'm so proud of you and how your site has grown in the short time that I've known you! You're an inspiration, really you are! Michelle
